Background and History
Tylan Kel completed her Starfleet Academy internship on the USS Odessey and graduated from Starfleet Academy in 2373 with exceptional scores in flight training while barely passing almost every other class. She ranked 27th in her class with a major in Astronavigation (Flight Systems) and minor in Intelligence (Covert Evasive Techniques), and in 2374 was assigned as the beta-shift pilot on the USS Australus, a Steamrunner Class support vessel. The next year she was promoted to and assigned to the USS Banshee, NCC-2020. Soonafter, her father became ill and Tylan took emergency leave to care for him, returning in 2377. She was on Risa briefly while awaiting assignment and met Lieutenant Martin Ramirez, a science officer from the USS Apollyon. That July, with the assistance of Ramirez, she was assigned to the Apollyon as Navigation/Operations Officer and Chief Shuttle Pilot. Commander Andrew Collier, captain of the Apollyon, made the specific request for her after Martin requested his help and in light of the assistance she had rendered to the Apollyon's mission on Risa.
Current Service:
Tylan Kel developed more and more engineering experience as a shuttle bay manager and pilot, realizing that her time as a pilot in the Maquis had forced her to learn the concepts of starship engineering without knowing just how much she had learned or how great her abilities were. She sought out more engineering time and eventually was assigned as an assistant engineer before ascending to a chief engineer position. In early 2390, she was assigned to the USS Atlantis midway through it's systems overhaul.
Personal History:
Tylan was born on Trill to wealthy and politically important Trill parents in 2348 and in 2350 her brother Shorem was born. Both attended Markel Primary School until Tylan's father Sevmas was posted to Rapatera, a planet in the Cardassian disputed zone, in 2360. In 2361 Cardassian peacekeeping forces invaded Rapatera and instilled marshall law. Tylan's father, unable to leave the planet or contact the Federation, organized a resistance cell, but in 2362 Tylan's father was betrayed to the Cardassians by a longtime family friend. Tylan's family attempted to flee but is unsuccessful. Tylan's mother and two older sisters are killed in the attempt. Tylan's father is captured and interrogated then sent to a labour camp. Tylan fell down an abandoned mine shaft injuring herself. Her brother Shorem climbed down after her and looked after her until they could escape.
At age fifteen Tylan became a full member of the local Cardassian resistance cell, which had ties to the Maquis. Tylan learned about ship operations and discovered she has some talent as a pilot. In 2363, while Tylan is becoming a member of the resistance, the then-current host of the Kel symbiant, Amzie Kel, was nearly killed by her former mentor, Commander Fitzgerald August in a covert ops mission where she was put in harm's way unneccesarily. Because of this experience, she flees Starfleet and joins the Maquis, being placed on the same ship as Tylan, who is unjoined at the time. In 2364 Tylan's ship Gazeas was disabled during a raid and Amzie Kel, the ship's weapons officer, is mortally wounded. In order to save the symbiant, it is implanted in Tylan.
Tylan was the pilot of the Gazeas when they were spotted by a Federation ship in 2365. After a prolonged hunt they were captured by the Federation ship. Tylan was sentenced to eighteen months home detention and placed with her brother in a foster home. Tylan's father was recovered from a Cardassian camp and the family reunited in 2367, and Tylan and Shorem returned with him to Trill. Tylan applied to and was refused admission to Starfleet Academy. Undeterred, Tylan applied a second time and in 2368 was accepted to the Academy.

Personal Characteristics
Tylan Kel, serial number SC 413-02207, is five foot, 8 inches tall, 135 lbs., with brown eyes and short, straight, dark brown hair. She has a solid and athletic build with light-olive skin with dark Trill spots and a small scar across navel from Trill implantation. She has had broken various bones, is violently allergic to chocolate, and cannot run very fast. Her blood type is BC-positive.
Personality:
With a thirst for adventure, Tylan can be impulsive, but she tempers this with a high intelligence and a symbiont's life experiences. She is emotionally and physically strong, very slow to trust others, and very suspicious of others' motives, and can be impatient and prone to rash actions. Kel is approaching old age for a symbiont. It has had 34 previous hosts and is extremly knowlegable about almost every topic. Kel drives Tylan crazy sometimes by knowing everything, and then telling her "I told you so" when Tylan ignores its advice. Her primary language is Trill, she is fluent in Federation Standard, and fair at the Klingon language. She enjoys Klingon combat techniques classes in her off-duty time.
Family:
Tylan Kel married Martin Ramirez in 2381. In 2388, Martin was killed in a shuttle accident while stationed apart from Tylan. Her mother, Yatmer, and two older sisters, Fontan and Colred, were killed during the initial Cardassian invasion of Rapatera. She has no children. Tylan believes and accepts that she may never again marry or have children, nor does she have much of a desire to "replace" Martin (which is how she sees it).
