Background and History
Paul Scott Marshall, serial number OR 544-11938, was born on in San Francisco on Earth on 05 December 2353. He graduated from Starfleet Academy where he was a member of the ill-fated final Red Squad group. Due to academic clashes, he was not participating in the USS Valiant training exercise that ended in disaster. His Academy internship was on the USS Atlantis, NCC-3028-A under the command of Captain Jacob Ryder, and Marshall was assigned, along with his newlywed wife, Shae'nok Rhea-Marshall, to the USS Heroic, a Steamrunner Classvessel, where he served as the Strategic Operations Officer after graduation as an ensign.
In July of 2375, Paul Marshall and Shae'nok Rhea are pulled from their assignment on the USS Heroic by Vice Admiral Gregor Harden. They are assigned to pilot a secret vessel to Starbase 375 for the Admiral and on 25 August they board the vessel, after having studied its design schematics. On 01 September 2375 they are assigned to the USS Brahma by Admiral Gregor Harden, Director of Starfleet Intelligence Special Projects. The USS Brahma is commanded by Lieutenant-Commander Spartan. The Marshalls were again reassigned in March of the following year to the USS Archimedes. With the launch of the new USS Atlantis (NCC-58314) in April 2378, Paul Marshall is selected personally by commanding officer Jacob Ryder to serve as a strattac officer. Marshall was a member of the crew at the time of Jacob Ryder's death but received transfer orders shortly thereafter.
Current Service:
Paul Marshall was promoted to Captain and assigned to Starbase 18 as the Starbase Operations Manager. After seven months in that assignment he was selected for starship command and after two more months USS Atlantis became available; Marshall requested the specific posting. Orders were approved by Vice Admiral Kimberly Yeung, Deputy Commander for Starfleet Starship Operations.
Personal History:
Paul Marshall was home-schooled his entire life until acceptance into Starfleet Academy, where he majored in Personnel Management with a minor in Engineering, one of the most grueling minor tracks of study available. His senior thesis was titled The New Art of Human Resource Management: "The War Shuffle". He also was on the Academy ice hockey team. As a cadet intern on the USS Atlantis (NCC-3028-A), Marshall met Petty Officer Shae-nok Rhea, a Bandi woman serving on the USS Atlantis. They were married on Earth at the Crystal Cathedral just before Marshall's Starfleet graduation in order to avoid violation of military fraternization policy. Shae-nok Rhea-Marshall later shortened her daily name to Shae Marshall, though she retains the full name on official and legal records. Paul and Shae have managed to acquire co-located Starfleet assignments for the significant majority of their service since marriage. Paul ranked third in his graduating class of the Academy.

Personal Characteristics
Paul Marshall is five foot, two inches tall with deep blue eyes and dark blond hair; his right eye has a "pie-slice" of brown on the upper side of the pupil. He has a Short and Solid, moderately muscular build with fair skin, is very athletically-oriented, and weighs 145 lbs. He has no allegies but developed hydrocephalus from a shuttle crash in his youth; Marshall has since fully healed from this condition. His blood type is O-negative.
Personality:
Paul Marshall is a categorical genius and true overachiever. In spite of these things - or perhaps because of them - he had social difficulties growing up which only began to completely subside in his late 20s. He finally learned to slow down and relax, in part due to the mentorship of Commodore Jacob Ryder during his Starfleet internship.
Paul Marshall was a Red Squad cadet, but due to a single-credit miscalculation in his transcripts, was unable to partake in his internship in his third year. Ironically, this would have placed him on the USS Valiant, which was subsequently lost with only one surviving cadet. Instead, he made up his internship during his fourth year. Since that time, he has worked to distance himself from his Red Squad association, due to the strong negative stigma that still exists among both cadets and officers. He rightly felt stigmatized by his Red Squad label, even years after graduating from the Academy. While at Starfleet Academy he was romantically involved with fellow Red Squad Cadet Dorian Collins, but they fell apart shortly after, and due in large part to, the USS Valiant disaster. Nevertheless, Paul Marshall has enjoyed a reasonably successful life so far as a Starfleet officer. He has paced himself in achievement so as to learn all he can as he progresses. His long-term plan wass to command a ship one day, but he wished to be sure of himself and the vessel before jumping into anything. Still, he seemed overeager at times. Ultimately, that overeagerness and focused determination earned him a command and his confidence vaulted more than enough prior to his assumption of command. He literally sees himself as "living the dream."
Paul's favorite book is The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli, his favorite color is Aqua-Green, and when asked his weapon of choice, will say any weapon given. Due to an experience early in his Starfleet time, he developed a strong dislike for security officers, finally reversing his opinions slowly as he served as a LtCommander and later Commander. Marshall has also been a member of the volunteer youth leadership development organization Civil Aerospace Patrol since his early teenage years and maintains his membership.
Family:
Marshall's wife is Shae Marshall. His parents are Richard Marshall and Ariana Middlemiss, and he has a younger brother, Scott Paul Marshall, who was born in 2362. He currently has no children. Marshall believes and accepts that he may never have children due to career and believes his wife to not desire to have children. Inwardly, Marshall would like to have at least one son and perhaps a second or, later in life (after his career has concluded), possibly even a third. He has no pets. To Paul Marshall, his crew is his family, and that family is the most important thing in his life after his own wife.
Spiritual:
Marshall is a believer of Ancient Protestant Christianity (18th-20th century era), specifically Classical Old English (Anglican), and he also accepts the validity of both Premodern Protestantism (21st-22nd century era) and Postmodern Protestantism (23rd century era through present).
